ACTING: INTRO TO ACTING

Whether you are an aspiring performer, wish to revitalize your creativity, or simply want to try something new and build self-confidence, you will find this course active, fun and rewarding. In this class, you will explore group exercises, drama techniques, improvisation, and the use of the voice and body on stage. You will learn to apply newly-acquired skills in character development to monologues and scenes.
ACTING: CONTEMPORARY SCENE STUDY
Begins Wednesday, July 23, 2020 at 7:00 pm
The class will explore compelling characters and scenes from playwrights such as Lauren Gunderson, Sarah Ruhl, Aaron Sorkin, Tracey Letts, and more. Students will be cover areas of acting, such as in-depth text analysis, character building and development, vocal and physical control.
PLAYWRITING: GETTING STARTED ON YOUR FIRST PLAY

What makes a great piece of theater? Or a compelling character? This class will teach you about the elements of playwriting, including character, setting, plot, and dialogue, as well as give you an opportunity to write to idea-generating prompts and engage in brainstorming activities. This class is geared toward beginning writers, but is useful for those with some playwriting background to put their skills to work. By the end, participants will have created an outline, a scene, or even a short play. Critique sessions by both the instructor and group will aide in constructive, safe feedback.
PLAYWRITING: ENHANCING DIALOGUE IN YOUR WRITING

Do you ever feel the characters in your writing are tongue-tied? In this playwriting class, you will learn a few simple techniques to create and enhance your best dialogue. Through a collaborative environment you will receive positive and constructive feedback that will bring out the best in your dialogue to find the truth of your characters and their stories.
MUSICAL THEATRE: ACTING THE SONG

Build your skills as a singing actor! In this course you will explore how to use an array of acting exercises to guide you in creating a script-to-stage process for a musical theatre performance. Each session will help you hone your craft by moving from personalization to characterization.
MUSICAL THEATRE: DANCE STYLES

Whether you are someone brand new to Musical Theatre or simply looking to expand/explore dance styles through the Musical Theatre form, this class is for you. This course is designed to combine movement/dance, Musical Theatre, and fitness by exploring choreography in the style of iconic artists like Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Alvin Ailey, Pina Bausch, and Martha Graham…to name a few. Come work up a sweat and join the fun!
TECH THEATRE: CREATING A MOOD

Join theatre educators and La Jolla Playhouse professionals as we explore how Technical Theatre components of paint, light, sound, props, and costume create the world of the play onstage. This course will be part lecture and discussion, and part hands-on activities.
