 One of the world’s leading flamenco artists, Israel Galván was described by the The Evening Standard as “achieving the near impossible feat of embodying flamenco’s ‘duende,’ or demon, while avoiding cliches.” His lightening-fast and passion-fueled dancing scorches the stage wherever he performs and he has reinvented flamenco for a new generation.
Galván constantly surprises and pushes boundaries both with his solo work and in collaboration with such diverse artists as flamenco masters Enrique Morente and Manuel Soler, contemporary choreographer Akram Kahn and jazz great Pat Metheny.
During the confinement of this past year, Galván has sought to "servir el baile" (serve the dance) by finding other spaces for "seguir bailando" (keep on dancing) until we can return to some semblance of normal again. He has focused his attention on the more spontaneous music and dance culture associated with cafes and bars worldwide as it feels more in tune with this moment in time, especially while our theaters are closed. Known for his ability to transform his body into an instrument and his hypersensitive ear, Israel Galván is able to ”hear” the air of public spaces in a way that amplifies their internal rhythms, pauses and silences which he uses as the score for his new work, Maestro de Barra, in which he marks the presence with his body, to point out, precisely, that everything one can hear, can also be danced to, that sounds can be ordered, accompanied and understood as a rhythmic vibration that can be translated into movement.
