Good People

Good PeopleA working-class woman in dire straits seeks help from a well-to-do old flame. Will he come through for her?

Covid safety protocols in effect on the day of performance will be observed. As of this writing, masks and vaccinations for audience members are required. Vaccination status will be checked. Please have a vax card or digital record.

Margie is a woman from the working-class neighborhood of South Boston.  She’s a single mom caring for a grown, severely autistic daughter. Margie has recently been fired and faces eviction. Her buddies at the local church Bingo game suggest that she look up an old fling and ask him for a job. Mike, the former beau in question, has gotten out of South Boston, become an M.D., and moved to the tony suburb of Chestnut Hill with his younger, beautiful Black wife and their daughter. When Margie arrives at his doorstep, what will he do?

In a comedy-drama rich with humor, Good People rubs against some hot-button issues, income inequality and racial politics among them.

The script is by David Lindsay-Abaire, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his play Rabbit Hole. His other Broadway credits include Shrek the Musical and High Fidelity. Good People debuted on Broadway in 2011.
Ann Hearn Tobolowsky directs. Recent directing credits include As Good As Gold and Bus Stop at Theatre 40, and three world premieres, The Favorite at Avery Schreiber Playhouse, Forever Bound at Atwater Theatre and at The Road Theatre, Through the Eye of a Needle. Two projects were in the works when the pandemic hit, and are now delayed to an unspecified future date, one for Theatre 40 (Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, recently a reading at Greystone Manor) and Scintilla for The Road Theatre Company.
Ann’s cast for Good People includes Alison Blanchard, Scott Facher, Michael Kerr, Suzan Solomon, Mariko Van Kampen and Charlotte Williams Roberts.
Set design: Jeff G. Rack. Costume design: Michèle Young. Lighting design: Derrick McDaniel. Sound design: Nick Foran. Stage manager: Ernest McDaniel.
Are Margie and Mike and the people in their orbits good people? See Good People and make your own determination.
