With the only immersive staging of The Nutcracker Suite, American Contemporary Ballet opens a magical door in the city to a mysterious holiday dream world.
Set inside a virtual holiday snow globe, ACB's 'Nutcracker' is inspired by ETA Hoffman's original tale and danced to live music from Tchaikovsky's beautiful score. The ballet's one-hour run time makes it a great choice for families.
ACB’S ‘NUTCRACKER’ SURROUNDS L.A. IN A FANTASY FOR ALL FIVE SENSES
There is no place more secret or fascinating than childhood – especially for those of us who’ve left it behind. This December, American Contemporary Ballet offers re-entry through a magical door in the city to a mysterious holiday dream world.
ACB’s The Nutcracker Suite is a Spielbergian fantasy that suspends both its heroine and audience in a magical snow globe of dance, music and mysterious delights too enchanting to leave behind, while also questioning whether any of us can remain in the Land of Sweets forever. Regardless of the answer, the company has had to increase performances of the world’s first immersive ‘Nutcracker’ every year since its 2017 premiere to meet the demand of those who’d like to visit, if only for one wonder-filled hour.
ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones’ take on the holiday favorite brings to life a fever dream for the senses, animated by Tchaikovsky’s famous score. “Tchaikovsky loved ETA Hoffman’s original story, but not the libretto he was given, which was based on a retelling by Alexandre Dumas that took out some of its teeth,” explains Jones. “Our production works from Hoffman’s original story. It’s performed to live music and includes pieces from the score you don’t traditionally hear among the ‘Nutcracker’ music that infiltrates popular culture and commercials during the holidays. It’s all great, but rarer pieces like “The Waltz of the Snowflakes” and the Grand Pas de Deux lend The Nutcracker Suite a depth and majesty that is chilling. This ballet is lighthearted, dark, and sublime all at once, and the music will last forever.”
ACB’s 'Nutcracker' lasts until December 24. Executive Director Theresa Farrell says the company is keeping show specifics a secret but likens it to experiencing The Nutcracker Suite in Disneyland. “I love watching kids and adults when the doors open – it’s like Christmas morning at every performance.”
