ACB presents the perfect Halloween celebration for the culturally inclined: A double-feature ballet seeped in gothic horror, set to a score by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Charles Wuorinen.
See the ballet that prompted KUSC to call American Contemporary Ballet "one of America's most adventurous and exciting ballet companies."
American Contemporary Ballet opens its ninth season with Inferno & Burlesque, a double dose of gothic horror and likely the strangest Halloween experience available in any medium.
Dante wrote his epic poem in the 14th century, but it still informs most artistic conceptions of the Underworld today. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Charles Wuorinen wrote “The Mission of Virgil” for New York City Ballet for a trilogy of ballets based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, but the company used only “Paradiso” (Paradise). ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones found the idea of meeting the creatures and travelers of Dante’s Hell on their journey to be the more dramatic tale, and premiered his groundbreaking immersive ballet in October 2017.
In 2018, Jones made the event a double feature, commissioning a new score from Wuorinen. “I was intrigued by the idea of having one of America’s most serious and acclaimed composers write a ballet score for a burlesque show, and result was phenomenal.” And perfect, perhaps, for a burlesque show as conjured by David Lynch. The series of dance episodes, each stranger than the last, may reveal more about the viewer than the viewed.
Another chance to see Inferno & Burlesque will likely be welcomed by the many ticket holders who saw it multiple times last season in attempts to form a conclusion, though ACB Executive Director Theresa Farrell promises “Just enjoying the intrigue and beauty of the ballet itself is enough.” For those seeking answers – or typical Halloween fare – maybe Dante himself had the best advice: “Thou must take another road.”
On Halloween night, the performance is followed by ACB’s annual Hellraiser, a benefit party with food, cocktails, live music, a series of immersive happenings, and this year, a special late night mass with Our Lady of Tantalization and world-famous burlesque artist Dita von Teese.
